Walking250.com About Us

Disclaimer: We are local Victorians and perhaps a little biased in our opinion, but we feel privileged to live in a city of such rich heritage and natural beauty.

When James Douglas came ashore in 1842, he famously said that he had found his ‘perfect Eden’. Decades ago we too found our ‘perfect Eden’. We left in a prairie blizzard arriving in Victoria to cherry blossoms gathering in drifts along the city streets. It was as dramatic a moment as the ‘Eden’ that Douglas had encountered.

With nature on our doorstep and accessible year round, our priorities began to change. We began spending more time outdoors and found that a short walk in nature went a long way to curing what ails you. Now decades later and happily retired we wanted to give back and promote those things unique and wonderful about our city. At some point while walking along the Dallas waterfront the walking250 web application came into focus.

Victoria relies on tourism, it’s Victoria’s life blood. Knowing that visitors have little time to discover the best a city has to offer, we decided to develop a directory of Victoria’s best walks and favorite businesses encountered along the way.

A group of us gathered in the local pub and waxed poetic about our favorite walks, elaborating on the view, the flora and fauna, historical significance and ease of passage for each one. Once our favorite walking routes were agreed upon we focused our attention to developing a ‘Local Favorites Menu’ based on those businesses voted as Victoria’s favorite establishments in polls conducted by Black Press Media. Our ‘Local Favorites Menu’ is certainly not a complete list of Victoria’s quality businesses but represents those local businesses that have displayed a continued standard of excellence, in our opinion, the best in the city.

Victoria’s rich heritage plays an important part in a visitor’s experience. To provide a unique way to explore the history of Victoria, we have developed an interactive ‘Wayback’ function that displays archival images of city life 100+ years ago.

We are especially grateful to the City of Victoria Archives and Victoria Heritage Foundation for the historical references and images we have used to better tell the story.

Ensure your visit  is a memorable one, put a walking250 tour guide in the palm of your hand.

Happy Trails,
Walking 250
